Procurement team to take undertaking from the manufacturer whether the tile is fit for flooring or wall dado.
Tile manufacturer’s authorized representative to be compulsorily be present during first time installation of tile and ensure that their guidelines are adhered to. (Often we observe that tile manufacturer blames the installation process when defects are pointed out in tiles. This will cover all bases.)
Ensure MEP clearance to be taken prior to start and make sure that pressure testing has been done
Ensure signoff document for waterproofing activity available at site.
Study drawings for Design layout and start point.
If necessary, after referring the architectural layout, shop drawing can be prepared and approved considering the design/on site wastages.
Decide which tiles to be cut. Cut tiles to be at edges so that they are hidden inside the skirting.
Vitrified tiles does not require pre-soaking, however for ceramic tiles pre-soaking for 2 hours is required.
Ensure dimension of spacer is checked.
Ensure adequate illumination in working area.
Mark the tile layout on wall surface receiving dado to verify the position of MEP fittings
Sorting of Tiles
Take 9 tiles and lay them in level
Check for any bends in tiles.
Check for any lippage in tiles by sliding coin
Check size of tiles with tape. Take 3 measurements along length and breadth
Check right angle of tile
Check tile thickness using Vernier calliper
Check colour, shade and pattern of tiles
Check for scratch, pinholes, bubbles
Remove faulty tiles
Keep a side min 3% of each batch for purpose of attic stock and label it properly.
Surface Preparation
Check surface is free of defects and ensure all the MEP works completed and clearance shall be taken by MEP team.
All Plumbing Lines are required to be plugged with end caps before Tiling Works.
Ensure any electrical and Plumbing fixtures are not getting off-centre like half at plaster wall half in tile area
For Kitchen area, gas hole preparation done with necessary hole making with Flexible hose installation in the wall area min of 25mm above from kitchen platform level
Ensure the Shower test has been done for external toilet wall surfaces.
Check electrical and plumbing chase cuts are filled with Ready mix plaster and fibre mesh jaali.
Check toilet waterproofing is done or not
Check water tightness carried out to ensure all tie rods, wall ties are filled properly
Transfer 1 m level marking from lift lobby
Clean surface with fresh water and the surface shall be in SSD before laying dado
Check tile bull mark, right angle & uniform internal dimension
Check thickness of adhesive for thin bed adhesive max 6mm and thick bed adhesive max 10mm.
In case the thickness is more than 10 mm, then Ready mix plaster is applied as backing plaster (chat coat) with hacking of min 40 Nos per sqft on RCC surface to rectify and ensure curing for 03 days. Make sure that the thickness of RMP plaster is maximum 15mm allowed.
Mark pattern on wall including marking for spacer
Install bottom patti (metal patti) horizontally on bottom layer of tile
Install bottom layer of dado tile after completing flooring considering the slope profile.
Installation
Mix paste of adhesive as per manufacturer guideline
The PVC tile spacer to be used, and which are manufactured by Arpita exports or as per equivalent approved by QAQC .
spacer Use 2 mm spacers for tiles up to 600 mm
Use 3 mm spacers for tiles more than 600 mm
Tile adhesive Kerakoll Bio tile or equivalent approved by QAQC to be used.
Apply adhesive on wall with 6 mm x 6 mm notch trowel in vertical direction.
Butter the back side of tile with adhesive and then use 6 mm x 6 mm notch trowel in horizontal direction
Install tile and tamp with rubber mallet for removing any air bubbles
Check level of tile with tile dhada & line dori
Ensure the ledge wall top and windowsill level to be followed as per approved drawing and make sure the level is transferred from 1M marking level.
Top layer of dado to be marked and checked after installation in case of false ceiling provision
Joint Filling For Tiles with Spacers
Clean the joint with mild detergent and sponge
Remove the PVC spacers after setting of bedding mortar or after 48 hrs
Remove the dust with patra and airblower
For dry areas use polymer modified cementitious grout
For wet & exterior areas such as toilets, balconies, terraces use epoxy grout.
Apply 1 inch paper masking tape
Tile grout Ardex endure brand or any equivalent approved by QAQC to be used.
Mix the grout with water as per manufacturer’s guidelines
Apply with rubber gurmala
Excess grout to be wiped off and finished within dado surface
Wait for 2 to 3 days and tamp with rubber mallet for hollowness
For a given tile, if hollowness observed in more than 2 out of 5 points (4 corners and center) then it shall be replaced.
Check for lippage by sliding coin across the tiles. If the lippage found exceeding permissible limit as per IS 15622, then the identified tile shall be replaced.
Material Storage Guidelines
Store tiles in a dry and well-ventilated area.
Always store tile with the labels on the edge of the boxes facing outward and placing as the mould surface of one faces that of another.
Maintain register for each batch of tile being delivered in a register. Keep aside min 3% of each batch for purpose of attic stock and label it properly.
Tiles shall be stacked in a manner to facilitate their removal; the 1st entry should be 1st out
Tiles shall not be stacked in a manner that height of the stack shall not be more than 1m.
